Letter to God, Almighty
Dear God,
The Bible, which we have been told is your word, says
in Numbers 23:19 that, “You are not a man that you should lie, neither are you
son of man that you should repent.”
In other words, you are sovereign,
blameless and just.
But I have a question for you, the Creator. I expect
nothing but the naked truth.
Are we Malawians, right? Is there any truth in our
boiling anger?
You have given us peace for nearly 60 years, while our
counterparts on the continent have had bloody civil wars.
Now, between Malawians and our counterparts reeling
from pangs of wars, who should be angrier than the other?
Dear God,
You gave us your pulpit man called Lazarus Chakwera as president. Was this a mistake? Or you were not on your desk on June 20, 2020, when we made him president?
Were you paying attention to what was to come? Did you
know that there would be a high cost of living? If you did, why didn’t you
prepare us for this?
There is one more thing to inquire about, Namalenga.
Have you inspired Malawians to bully your own Lazarus? Are you okay with this? Has he [Chakwera] deviated from your righteous path, and you have left him to his own devices?
Dear God,
You are on trial, and you are being tried in the Court of Public Opinion.
Are you okay with the injustices happening in our
nation? Do you sleep well at night, if at all you do?
If people can turn into billionaires overnight, kill each other mercilessly, rape children; and you still call yourself a just God? Where is justice in all this? Are you waiting for Judgement Day while recipients of such injustice suffer? Are you seeing all this?
God, is it just for murderers, fraudsters, swindlers
to roam freely while those with petty crimes rot in jails?
Tell me, God, is it just for those who administer
justice on your behalf in Malawi courts to be corrupt, thus defiling your
justice?
Whose justice are they administering? Your justice? Do
you like it? Or do you loathe it? How does that make you feel?
Dear God,
There’s this man called Peter Mutharika. Do you still have unfinished business with him?
I ask this question because he wants us to make him
president again. Yet, in 2020 you willed his removal from office.
Now, I am wondering: did you really sanction his
removal? Or you had nothing to do with it?
Are you really the one inspiring Malawians to like a
man—someone whom you allowed to be voted out?
If you do, I am inclined to believe that you’re a God
of contradictions.
Dear God,
I may be wrong in my human assumptions.
But make me understand: why reverse your decision now?
Are you a God of trial and error?
But if you had nothing to with his removal, then thank
you for planning to get him back. We have learned dangerously that you are God
who gives us freedom to choose and own the consequences of our choices.
Dear God,
You infused us with logic and reason. And that’s why I
have written you a somewhat scathing letter.
It’s not that I’m rebellious. Neither do I intend to
put your righteous name to shame. I’m just being rational and inquisitive.
Apologies, dear God, if you feel I’m interrogating
you.
May you forgive our trespasses and cover us in your
abiding love.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Davie Mchinga.
